Nature Notes

Wow! We had some major thunder-bumpers move through last night! In fact, at 5 a.m. we still have rain and flashes of far-away lightning. Today is supposed to be rainy and relatively cool (highs in the 70s). As hot as it's been, it's also been a very wet, stormy summer so far. The forecast for the weekend looks partly-sunny and seasonal (temps in the low 80s). ******************************************

Chipmunks are cute, but they sure can be fierce! Not with people of course (I woudn't want to start any rumors), but with each other! Two of them are beneath our spruce tree just now chasing each other around madly! And the little squeaks! They must be very territorial. I don't see them chasing off birds or squirrels - just other chipmunks. ******************************************

Do the squirrels know something we don't? We've noticed them burying nuts (seeds, etc.) with increasing frequency. This seems a little early in the season ... might there be a bad winter ahead? ******************************************

A storm rolls in - bringing with it drenching rain and peals of thunder (though strangely, no lightning to speak of) and then the storm rolls out - leaving things all sparkly and golden. So summery here - so muggy and buggy. This is late July in New England. ****************************************** Just before the last storm hit, a hummingbird flitted through the backyard. ****************************************** I just heard the "heat bug" (aka the cicada) buzzing in the woods! This is the first time this year I've heard it -not that it hasn't been plenty hot. ****************************************** I'll have to take pictures of my pumpkins! They are so beautiful! We planted two sugar pumpkin vines and they are sprawling all around beneath the birdhouse. There are lots of small firm green fruits all along the sturdy vines - and still plenty of golden blossoms. I hope nothing tries to eat them (fruits or vines). This fall we should have *plenty* of sugar pumpkin to can! ******************************************

More on the Learning Room

As if my first post about our learning room was not (long) enough, I'm back with a few more pictures!

First of all, I got the world map put back up today:

Learning_room_map

It's laminated so we can use dry erase markers to add interesting details like trade routes, ancient empires and where beluga whales live - stuff like that. My husband's parents gave the boys each laminated USA maps - perfect as placemats! We also moved the school supplies up out of you-know-who's reach:

We treasure this particular crucifix - it was made by my great-grandfather many years ago. The crystal votive candle holder has a cross beveled in the front - my parents brought it home for us from Ireland; we light it quite often and especially whenever we are praying together. And sure it looks like we have lots of pencils - but are any of them sharpened? :)

Though it's still very much a work in progress, here is a picture of the new desk and study area in the older boys' room:

On the left is a set of thin drawers for various supplies and paper. The middle section is the desk (we have yet to hang the bulletin board), and on the far right is the bookcase. We're still in discussions with the boys as to how it should all be organized - but when we get it all "filled in" we'll post an updated picture!

Finally, below is a picture of the front window in the living room (more often known as the children's library these days). The boys are still small enough to get up in it and read, but sometimes I like to use it as a display shelf for books of a certain focus (this week is autumn).

And this is how the window might otherwise be used as a learning space:

A sunny afternoon is a perfect time to enjoy a snack and the dictionary. Bookworm spent a good while looking up some "words he's been wondering about." :)

This weekend I'm working on setting up the file folder system I mentioned in my previous post as well as my lesson planner and all the materials for next week - our first! I will post more about that later this weekend. I feel a little rusty so it's taking me longer than I thought it would (should)!

That looks like a great set up. I had to check out some of the books you have on the shelf since I seem to love everything you mention.

Dawn, may I ask where you found those stools? I'm looking for something like that. Admittedly, I'm not a big shopper so I probably don't even know where to look for such. Online ordering is my friend. I love your set-up. We're trying to overcome the semi-unfinished basement blues to get things ready for our new schoolyear. I'm hanging old sheets. :-)

Hi JoAnna,

We bought those stools (and the desk and bookcases) at The Mill Store (www.millstores.com). They are all over New England, but I would think any unfinished furntiture store would have a similar style.

Hope that helps! :)

Violet would give her eyeteeth for a window seat!! What a beautiful space you have for learning, thanks for adding in these extra's for us to see! Blessings!

Marianna calls bay windows 'Book Nooks' and yours is a wonderful example!
