Nature Notes

Wow! We had some major thunder-bumpers move through last night! In fact, at 5 a.m. we still have rain and flashes of far-away lightning. Today is supposed to be rainy and relatively cool (highs in the 70s). As hot as it's been, it's also been a very wet, stormy summer so far. The forecast for the weekend looks partly-sunny and seasonal (temps in the low 80s). ******************************************

Chipmunks are cute, but they sure can be fierce! Not with people of course (I woudn't want to start any rumors), but with each other! Two of them are beneath our spruce tree just now chasing each other around madly! And the little squeaks! They must be very territorial. I don't see them chasing off birds or squirrels - just other chipmunks. ******************************************
  • 7/21/08
Do the squirrels know something we don't? We've noticed them burying nuts (seeds, etc.) with increasing frequency. This seems a little early in the season ... might there be a bad winter ahead? ******************************************
  • 7/20/08
A storm rolls in - bringing with it drenching rain and peals of thunder (though strangely, no lightning to speak of) and then the storm rolls out - leaving things all sparkly and golden. So summery here - so muggy and buggy. This is late July in New England. ****************************************** Just before the last storm hit, a hummingbird flitted through the backyard. ****************************************** I just heard the "heat bug" (aka the cicada) buzzing in the woods! This is the first time this year I've heard it -not that it hasn't been plenty hot. ****************************************** I'll have to take pictures of my pumpkins! They are so beautiful! We planted two sugar pumpkin vines and they are sprawling all around beneath the birdhouse. There are lots of small firm green fruits all along the sturdy vines - and still plenty of golden blossoms. I hope nothing tries to eat them (fruits or vines). This fall we should have *plenty* of sugar pumpkin to can! ******************************************

Announced by all the trumpets of the sky ...

Snowstorm

Arrives the snow ...

As promised, here are LOTS of pictures I took today during the storm. I'm sure you're not surprised there are many (or mostly) bird photos here. ;)

It was very hard NOT to take pictures today. Lol, the camera never left my side. The birds were just lovely to watch. Even now, as the light fades dramatically, they are out there ~ filling their little bellies with seeds, suet and corn. And by the way ~ the fourth bird down (under the woodpecker picture) ~ can anyone tell me if that is a pine siskin? If so, this would add a new species to our bird list! :)

In all, I'd say we got about 10 inches or maybe a foot. Plenty for our Thursday Nature Club meeting (our January theme: tracks in the snow). We should be able to squeeze that activity in before we get more snow; from what I just heard on the afternoon news, another storm's coming this Friday ...

Thanks so much for stopping by today. I hope you all had a good one. I'll leave you with a lovely little quote I just found today:

"Snowflakes are one of nature's most fragile things, but just look what they do when they stick together." (Verna Kelly)

So incredibly beautiful!

Wow, Dawn the pictures are so pretty. You take such great pictures. I wish we would get a fresh covering of snow here in MN. Enjoy it.

gorgeous pix! my 9 yr old birder says you are correct, pine siskin. that bird is supposed to be in ohio, but we have never seen it. lucky you - lots of snow AND a new bird!

A cardinal!! How beautiful. That snow is just lovely, we are having a very dry winter up here in Southern Alberta.

Gorgeous, Dawn! I love the pic of the little titmouse peeking out from behind the icicles! So cute! And I am so jealous of your snow!!!!

Below the woodpecker? That is the 6th picture not the 4th! It does look like a pine siskin ;) The other alternative is a female finch... but if it has yellow on it (which it LOOKS like in the photo but I can't be sure) then it is the pine siskin!

I LOVE the picture of the cardinal in the snow... I always think they look so beautiful!

Sorry... I wasn't trying to double post :/ The machine hung up!

Ohhh! I'm so jealous. We have snow falling now, but we can't seem to pay the birds to come to us. We are surrounded by corn/soybean fields so maybe that is why. But I filled our feeders and even scattered some on the ground. The feeders are still full and that was around Thanksgiving. If you have any tips I would appreciate it.

Sometimes I am absolutely speechless at the beauty of God's creation!! Thanks for sharing your pictures today Dawn. It's one of the downfalls of living in Florida....no snow and very little cold weather!!

We only got about 3 inches or so -- nice gentle, wet snow :-). My favorite pic is the same as Theresa's :-). All we saw today were chickadees.

So pretty Dawn. You should do a nature calendar with your photos.

Oh my goodness, those are beautiful photos. What an amazing winter wonderland! We live in Texas now, but you brought back memories of when we were in South Dakota and I would spend all afternoon watching my bird friends at the feeders. :0)

P.s I found out about your blog from the homeschool awards, it's wonderful!

They are even more beautiful than I thought they would be. WOW WOW WOW
Several of your pictures deserve to be in books Dawn, really.
Blessings Lori

My husband wants to know what kind of camera and lens you use to get such beautiful pictures. He's been looking at getting a new (better) one to replace our oft-dropped Canon A85.

Your pictures are beautiful. We got the snow, but no beautiful birds.

I'm curious, when you live in an area that gets a lot of snow, does your husband still have to go to work on a day like this? I'm in S. Indiana and when we have 10 inches of snow, the whole town shuts down!!

Beautiful pictures!!

What beautiful pictures. I wish that Cardinals lived where I am- that red against the snow looks gorgeous.

Breathtaking! You have got the most wonderful feathery friends, Dawn. It's beautiful out here in the Worcester Hills, too. Just gorgeous.

Oh I love the bird pictures. I took a field biology class in high school and fell in love with birds. I hope I can pass the knowledge (and love) onto my children. I do miss the cardinals though. There aren't any in WY. :(

Wow! What glorious pictures. The red cardinal is stunning -- we don't get those here in Australia -- they are wonderful!

Simply beautiful!

Beautiful. My oldest especially enjoyed the bird photos.

You could be a professional wildlife photographer! We so enjoyed these pictures!
