I have only a few precious moments to spend online this morning - first day back and all! - but I wanted to quickly share with you my outline for Earlybird's Kindergarten this year. I'm sure you're not surprised to hear that when I plan a curriculum for my children, I like to work around themes, and that those themes mostly tie in with the seasons. As we move through the year, I will be posting our weekly activities and books etc. here at my blog.
And so, this is our first week of Kindergarten, and we are focusing on Bugs and the letter B. (Yes, I'm starting with B, rather than A; just call me a rebel.) I will post later - today, maybe tomorrow - more details about our Bug week. :)
~*Kinder Themes for Autumn*~
9/1 Bugs (late summer buzzes)
9/8 Apples (picking, making sauce etc.)
9/15 Harvest (farmstand, Harvest Moon)
9/22 Autumn (what is fall, the changing seasons)
9/29 Michaelmas (knights, dragons)
10/6 Leaves (fall foliage, raking)
10/13 Birds (making a feeder together)
10/20 Seeds (all kinds, how they travel)
10/27 Halloween (pumpkin patch visit)
11/3 Stars (window stars, meteor showers)
11/10 Winter Beds (hibernation)
11/17 Gifts (making Christmas gifts)
11/24 Thanks (Thanksgiving, gratitude)
12/1 Trees (woodwork, a tree for the birds)
12/8 Gingerbread (Gingerbread Friends)
12/15 Winter (what is winter, changing seasons)
12/22 Christmas (family and faith)
12/29 All Year Round (bells, how time passes)
And now I'd best be off ... it's just shy of 6:00 here, and still quite dark. My older boys are still sleeping, but they'll be up and running before I know it. Time to put the math out on the worktable and pour myself another cup of coffee. :)
So, have a great day, and wherever you do your learning, I wish you a very happy new (academic) year!

Dawn, I know this is an old post - I hope you have some way of seeing this comment!
Would you mind sharing the rest of your Kinder plans?
I am using a packaged curriculum, but want to include a lot of nature study as well - and I've always so enjoyed your ideas.
Thanks for anything you can do!

I'm so excited to be going through the Kinder year with you as my eldest is there, too. I really enjoyed reading about the Waldorf curriculum you shared - gave me some good ideas. I hope you guys have a great year learning together!

Looks great! I love Autumn and all the themes that can go with it!
By the way - I'm not Catholic, so please excuse my ignorance......what is Michaelmas? It looks like something my boys would love. We really enjoyed celebrating Saint George last year. Thanks!

I like the way you tied in a weekly theme to alphabet sounds. We're doing kindergarten, too, this year, but we won't be starting until later in September. I was planning on making some "theme bags" for farmerboy -- science related mostly -- but I hadn't thought about tying them into a letter of the week. (I actually misread the title on my googler reader as long-i "KIND-er themes", though, and I wondered - how could her themes for autumn get any kinder? LOL But those are indeed very kind themes for kindergarten, so it works either way.)

Thank you for the ideas! My 5yo is kind of being swept up into my 7yo's work, and I want to make sure I still give him his Kindergarten year. These weekly themes give me a real jump start. Thanks again, and best of luck as you begin school (we start next week!)

What a lovely set of themes that are tied so closely to the turning year. I may keep the list for myself as I work to tie our family life to the season. Rather than bugs, however, my intention is to explore monarchs this week!
