It's been raining here quite steadily, but when - for just the briefest moment - the autumn sun broke through, this glistening spider web caught my eye. I called the boys to the window and we spent several minutes marveling over the intricate design, enjoying the warmth of the sun and watching the spider do what spiders do best - make itself a snack from some passing hapless fly.
We're a little excited about this discovery because it's been a long while since we've had an interesting spider to observe, and this particular arachnid (an orb weaver, my favorite kind) set up its housekeeping right outside our learning room windows.
How very thoughtful. ;)

Yes, a very thoughtful spider indeed! Their work really is so beautiful and fascinating, isn't it? Glad you noticed it, so you and the boys can enjoy it for awhile longer, and learn a bit more about a spider's life. Have fun!

We've been seeing many orb weavers in our area lately. I live on the west coast. Spiders really creep me out, but orb weavers are fascinating. I almost walked into a web spun by one of these spiders and I can't even imagine how freaked out I would have been! LOL!! And here is one more little tidbit I'll share. We actually took a HUGE spider to our local zoo b/c we could not believe how big it was and we knew the insect zoo would love to have it. When we took it in, we found out it was a harmless orb weaver and yes, they kept it in their insect zoo! That's how we first learned about orb weavers.

We have what looks to be the same kind at our house. The interesting thing is that they stay in their orb for a very long time-through rain and wind. I wonder what the technical name is...
