Hello!

  • Welcome to my little nature corner! I am starting this blog on January 1st, 2007 and it is my goal to write something every day - in hopes of creating a family almanac by the end of the year. Some days it might just be the temperature, others it will be (I hope) posts full of pictures and observations. I hope you enjoy your time here!

Everyday Nature

  • ~Early Spring Birds~
Now's the time of year to start watching for spring migrants passing through. Keep your bird guides handy so you can identify them! It's also the time to hear spring birdsong (it will sound new and yet familiar) and to observe courting behavior. :) ******************************************

Birds at the Feeders

The Full Wolf Moon

So what will you be doing at exactly 8:57 a.m. today (EST)? How about you stop whatever it is you are doing, and take a few moments to howl at the Full Wolf Moon? That's when it happens, and that's what we plan to do today! What a fun way to kick off our home learning day ...

We will also read the January selection from a beautiful book of nature poems, When the Moon is Full: A Lunar Year:

The Wolf Moon

The weather chill,

the night is long,

wolf lifts his head

in lonely song.

His notes float high,

his notes drift low,

mournful in the

moonlight glow.

This month's moon was so named by Native Americans because wolves become restless atDiscovering_wolves this time of year.

For more wolf information we will look at a great book given to Bookworm by my Aunt Pat and Uncle Dave at Christmas - Discovering Wolves. There's lots of information and fun activities inside.

In lieu of the familiar "wolf-is-the-bad-guy" type of story, we'll also read a favorite picture book - The Story of the Kind Wolf. I love its gentle message and soft illustrations.

And to hear wolves in action, we'll check out this link to Wolf Hollow, a place where wolves are protected and researched. We went there a few years ago and it was quite an experience to see those magnificent creatures close up (relatively - they were behind a high chain link fence) and to hear them howl on command. You would think it would have been frightening, but really it was beautiful.

And of course, we'll be gazing at the moon in all its fullness tonight. The weather is clear so we should be able to see it.

Enjoy!

My son loves the moon and I had been searching for a good moon picture book. That first one looks perfect. Thank you.

Wolves + Full Moon = one of Marianna's favorite times. Aaoooooh! (A traditional howl from the bow of the boat by a Julie and the Wolves wannabe)
