A Sure Sign of Spring
Crackerjack Was Right!

Hawks at 2:00!

Throw the math books out the window!! We just spied four enormous hawks circling ourCrackerjacks_vulture back yard ...

They seemed to narrow in on an area out back, along the old railroad bed ... what were they doing? And what kind of hawks were they? They were bigger than any hawk we've ever seen and seemed to be entirely brown (as opposed to variegated or reddish). They were too fast for my camera ...

As I am typing, I see them again out the windows. Are they a family? Two pair? Are they hunting, or protecting a nest?

My boys ~ as you might imagine ~ are wide-eyed and nearly hysterical (LOL)! We are looking up "hawks" in every bird book we own ...Next comes a web search, I think!

We had taken a little break to investigate a half-formed nest we spied beneath our window (it's tough to get work done by those windows sometimes), and had just stepped back in to resume lessons, when we spied the hawks through the window.

We usually do history on Mondays, but I'm thinking it has just become a science day ... Gosh, I love homeschooling!

P.S. Above you see Crackerjack 's coloring (from the Birds of Prey Coloring Book); it is a picture of a turkey vulture, of which he is convinced these birds are! Could be, but I think he might be a bit influenced by Ice Age 2. :)
