Well folks, I'm behind again on answering questions here at my blog and I sincerely apologize. Please know I am so SO grateful that you take the time to read my posts and to thoughtfully ask questions for further clarification. I know I've said this before, but I want to say it again - I don't ever mean to ignore your questions, it just takes me a good long while to get back to you! (And thank you for your patience and understanding.) I have gone back through the last few week's worth of posts and found questions that were never answered. I have answered them below. I think there may still be some in the October archive, but this was all I had time for just now ...
Well Chrissy, we also love the Harry Potter movies! :) And they are (in my humble opinion), much better than The Dark is Rising. I found TDIR physically dark (lighting, shadows, eerie elements) and sort of depressing. I must admit I did not read TDIR, and I think some background might have helped. I have read all the HP books and when I see the movies, it is a joy to encounter familiar characters (whether they be friend or foe). If there's a dark scene (and as you know the HP movies do get darker as they go on) it is for a reason. Because I know the stories, I understand the reasons why, and I understand a character's motives (more or less). That takes the edge off I think. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix might have been a dark movie, but it was SUCH a good story, the darkness didn't put me off.
Now ... all that said ... my boys (the older two, 12 and 8) have only seen the first two HP movies (and not in the theater, but on DVD). My 12yo has read all the HP books and the 8yo has read the first two (with me reading aloud). I'm pretty cautious about what they see, so maybe my take on The Dark is Rising is a bit "overcautious." My 12yo liked it and was not scared by it, but he did say it was vastly different from the book.
Sorry this was such a late reply, but I hope that helped a little. :)
I love the letters. I think my dc would enjoy painting them too... where did you get the turkey?
Posted by Cheryl
(Cheryl is referring to a craft in this post.)
Cheryl, the turky came with a set of wooden farmyard animals we purchased one Christmas. I *think* it was from either Magic Cabin or Nova Natural. The turkey is made by a German company called Kinderkram.
I love the bread containers. Any chance you will share the pumpkin bread recipe with us?Heather, the pumpkin bread recipe can be found here - just replace the banana with 2 cups pumpkin. Delicious!
A question: You listed pages of books in your file folder. Do you just make copies for those pages? That's such a good idea!!!
Thanks, KC ~ and yes I do! It just helps me a little to keep the copied page in my folder for easy reference - and then I can put the book back on the shelf. So, if there's a craft idea described on a page in Mrs. Sharp's Traditions, I photocopy the page and stick it in the folder. The book then gets filed back on the shelf. Then next year when I plan, I remember that craft (or recipe or poem or whatever) because I look back through all the folders' contents.
Hi Dawn,
I have a couple of questions. First of all regarding what you do with your kids' completed school papers. What do you do if you ever want/need to refer back to one of your children's papers he has completed? Is everything really just mixed up in one big stack? This is a very liberating concept. :)
Secondly, I noticed on several of your posts you seem to enjoy magazines. I love them and want to buy every one that comes along...especially if it has the word, "organize," or "easy solution." Anyway, do you save magazines or just cut out what you like? I have a growing Mount Periodical that needs some attention.
DeAnn,
Question 1: I do keep all their papers in one pile (in the in-basket) and then they go right in the storage box. I find I am able to go back and flip through if I need something. There might be a lot in there, but it's all in order, for the most part. ;)
Question 2: Oh, yes I LOVE magazines! I only save a few though - Martha Stewart Living, Everyday Food, Victoria, Taste of Home and The Baker's Sheet. (I save most of the kids periodicals, however. Those are getting to be a bit of a problem!) The rest of my magazines I cut up and recycle (I tape interesting or inspiring things in my journal).
Dawn, could you explain briefly what "math journaling" is? Or post a link, or something. It sounds intriguing, but I have no idea what one would write! Thanks!
Since I'm short on time, Mary Ann, here are a couple of links to get you started. I'll post more about our math journals as soon as I can (or as soon as we have stuff in there to show you). ;)
Will you please re-publish that recipe for the Lemon Snowballs? I'd love to try them this year!
Here it is: Light and Lemony Snowball Cookies!
I'd like to know more about the crocheted snowflakes. I do some crochet, but would like to take this up. Therese's mom? Or anyone chime in with some help please?
God bless,

Angela, I don't have instructions for this craft (and I'm afraid I don't even know how to crochet!) but Therese's mom, if you'd like to describe the instructions in the comments box (or email me if that's easier) I can post them here. Alternatively, if anyone knows how to make crocheted snowflakes, please let us know! :)
I really liked your lantern idea, so today we had to make our own. Thanks so much for all the great and fun ideas you share. I will do a post about our lanterns next week. I would like to link back to this post if you don't mind???
Thanks again.
You are more than welcome to link back here, Lori! Thanks for your very kind words!
Dawn,
Is there some place I can learn about how you lesson plan ... do you have any tips or guidelines?
Thanks, Dawn, for sharing.
Blessings,
Emily
Thank YOU Emily! If I may, please let me link you to a few older posts - on the subject of lesson planning. I'm sure there will be more before long, lol:
Well, it looks (or rather sounds) like my time is up ... I hear that 9 o'clock chime ringing and I must be off to bed. I hope this Q & A post has been helpful to some! (And sorry about the odd-sized text here and there. In an effort to save time, I copy-pasted comments directly from my blog and it appears some of it pasted in too small ...)
Well, thanks everyone, and have a good night!
My oldest wanted to see Dark Is Rising. How would you compare it to the Harry Potter movies? My kids love those.
