Every once in a while I am reminded just how efficient it is not only to keep journals - but to go back over them from time to time. This past week I spent some time looking through my spring notebooks from years past, and came across this neat little planting idea:
Just in time for Palm Sunday. :)
I didn't have exactly the right materials on hand ... I couldn't find "Little Gem" romaine lettuce seeds as suggested in the article, so I settled for "Emerald Oak" lettuce instead. And that wire basket shown in the picture is lovely, but I made due with a small woven basket I had on hand. Also, in place of the soft, natural moss shown above, I used some shredded paper Easter grass for the base.
The first thing we did was to crack open (carefully) three extra-large brown eggs and wash them out well. Then we let them dry in the sun.
I also bought some "French Breakfast" heirloom radish seeds. I decided to plant them in our pretty pansy goblets ...
(Jo asked about these goblets which I showed in my recent Pansy post. I bought these about 16 years ago on a trip to Disney World with Bill's family. We visited in February and there were beautiful pansies all over the park. I thought these goblets would be a nice reminder of our visit.)
I brought everything outside and Bill helped me add a healthy amount of potting soil to our various "pots." (See top picture.) We added the seeds, topped them with a dusting of soil, then brought them back inside to sit on the sunny learning room windowsill.
Will we see signs of life by Easter Sunday?
Once we have tiny lettuce seedlings growing in our eggs, we'll plant them outside, eggs and all (making sure to break up the eggs a little to make room for the roots).
This was a lovely craft for Palm Sunday - I wish I had posted about it sooner - but it would be a quiet and meaningful activity for any time during Holy Week.
Speaking of Holy Week, I hope yours is off to a great start! As you can see, our weather today was glorious - sunny and 60 degrees. Now if only next Sunday will be so nice!
Thanks for stopping by today ~ I will be back again sometime soon!
