I am so upset. We just chased the neighbor's cat out of a tree where she had almost made off with our little red squirrel! I thought he made it OK but now he is in our spruce tree with an obviously injured foreleg and he seems like he's in shock. He's just kind of resting and every few minutes takes a tentative leap onto a higher branch. I am hoping, fervently, that he will be OK. We once saved a gray squirrel from a similar situation, only he ended up on the ground hardly able to move. I was moments away from trying to get him to a vet or something when he made it into the rhododendron bush and sort of just hung out in there, much as red tail is doing now. Eventually he was off in the woods. OH Goodness - he almost just fell - Red Tail that is. He's really having trouble leaping. I can hardly watch, and yet if he falls, I don't know what I'll do? Thinking aloud here people - and quite distressed. Sometimes nature watching is a tough business.

Update - I can no longer see where the squirrel is in the tree; he must be very high up. The cat came back and I spied her just as she started up the tree trunk. It goes without saying I chased her off. I guess it's a good sign that he was able to get up and away from the cat. At least I assume he did - he's not on the ground anyway!

Update #2 He is nowhere to be seen. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. To add insult to injury, it is freezing cold and sleeting right now. I sure hope the little fella makes it back to his nest before nightfall.

Tough Nut, another Sassy Cat survivor, is here at the feeders. Glad I don't have to worry about her.

Linda, thank you so very much!
This blog is my "storage spot" for the nature notes I feature on my main blog, By Sun and Candlelight. I do most of my nature posts there (more in-depth posts, that is). I would be honored to have either of both blogs included in your blog roll!
I'll email you now. :)
